Winmalee High School has become renowned in the community for its highly successful school musicals.

It is a much-anticipated event in the school's calendar every second year. Audiences travel from as far as Sydney and beyond to experience the magic and wonder of our productions. Winmalee has been presenting musicals since the school began, with the early ones being written and composed by the staff and students.

Over the years we have presented Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Grease, Les Miserables, Into The Woods, Seussical, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Addams Family, The Little Shop of Horrors, The Wizard of Oz and the most recent being Matilda the Musical.

Over the years, the choice and production values have grown to an impressive standard. The quality of the costumes, sound, lighting and set design as well as the talent of the students are regularly commented upon by members of the community at large. The success of the Musical is due to the collaborative production team which generally consists of up to 15 staff across every faculty in the school.

Over the years, the choice and production values have grown to an impressive standard. The success of the Musical is due to the collaborative production team which generally consists of up to 15 staff across every faculty in the school.

More than 100 students take part being a member of the cast, orchestra or crew and it is supported by not only the school community but the wider community as a whole. Students have the opportunity to develop long-lasting friendships across a number of year groups and engage their creative, artistic and organisational skills in acting, singing, dancing, orchestra, lighting, sound, costume, makeup, set painting and front of house.

Each year, one of the highlights for the performers is the matinee show for the local primary schools. Hundreds of students from Springwood, Ellison and Winmalee Public schools enjoy the show and enthusiastically participate in a meet and greet of the cast afterwards.

All students who are involved in the musical thoroughly enjoy the experience with most citing it as one their best and most rewarding experiences during their time at High School.

Matilda cast 2023

Winmalee High School presented Matilda the Musical in 2023.

Matilda the Musical is story of an extraordinary girl who dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. During her first term at school, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognise and appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves to punish those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Rhythm ticket

'Rhythm' was a 'home-grown' product, written by two students Cathy Lockley and Amanda Haines. 

Their ideas were incorporated into a song and dance spectacular and produced a script which followed the lives of a group of people preparing a musical for the Broadway stage. 

It was performed on 20, 22 & 23 March 1991.

Fab cast members

In 1989 Winmalee High School produced its first musical, 'Fab'. 

The script was written by a Year 11 student, Nicole Beaver, now Nicole Dalby, currently teaching at Winmalee High School (2022).
