What is Music?

Music at Winmalee High School is a course that provides students with individual and group musical skills, focusing on performance, composition and listening in a variety of contexts. We pride ourselves on strong and consistent HSC results each year which are regularly above state average with many students progressing onto tertiary music education. We support the developing musician to enhance their musical potential through Stages 4-6.

What does learning look like in Music?

Winmalee High School has quality facilities for our performing arts programs. Our Performing Arts Centre (PAC) allows for rehearsal space and an intimate performance area. With well-equipped music specialist rooms and a variety of musical instruments we cater for a wide range of performance opportunities.  Music has a computer laboratory with current and subject specific software such as Sibelius notation and Sony Acid. Winmalee High School has several large ensembles including a Concert Band, Jazz Band, String Ensemble, Vocal Groups, and guitar ensemble. We have devoted and dedicated students who have many opportunities at a local, regional and state level to further develop their musical skills. In recent years many students have been featured artists in prestigious programs such as PULSE, Schools Spectacular and the Talent Development Project. Many of our students also take part in the NSW Department of Education's Arts Unit music programs such as the NSW Public Schools Symphonic Wind Ensemble and NSW Public Schools Jazz Orchestra.

The Music course at Winmalee High School is a course that provides students with individual and group musical skills,  focusing on performance, composition and listening in a variety of contexts. We support the developing musician to enhance their musical potential through Stages 4 and 5. Students will study a wide variety of topics including Rock Music, Jazz, Music of Other Cultures, Classical Music and Australian Music

Students study mandatory Music in Stage 4, Year 7 and 8.

An elective Music Course is offered in Stage 5, Years 9 & 10.

We pride ourselves on strong and consistent HSC results each year which are regularly above state average with many students progressing onto tertiary music and performing arts education. We offer the following courses for the HSC: Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension. Music 1 can be successfully studied in the senior school without completing the Year 9 and 10 component.

Students in the Preliminary and HSC music courses will study a range of topics including Music of the Last 25 Years, Jazz, Music For Film, Radio, Television and Multimedia and An Instrument and its Repertoire. Students will elect to specialise in either performance, composition or musicology.
