Canteen

Canteen

All canteens in NSW public schools must meet certain requirements. These include providing more healthy food and drink options – to make the healthy choice an easy choice for students. Visit Healthy school canteens to learn more.

Winmalee High School has moved to the Healthy school canteen model.  All funds raised through the canteen are used by the school for the purchase of items to improve learning or the learning environment. e.g. provision of more books, equipment and facilities for the school.

The school has a spacious and well appointed canteen which has proved a benefit to the students. This canteen is managed by Lisa Hooley and a team of parents and students. The successful operation of the canteen depends on the willingness of parents to give voluntary help.

Since our school commenced, the response has been excellent, but as our school continues to grow, we are seeking more assistance. Parents are rostered for one day every four weeks; some are willing to be called at short notice and help in the case of emergency. Parents find the day at the canteen a time of good fellowship with other parents and a satisfying service to the students. The time working in the canteen is from 10.30am to 1.30pm on any day.

  • Prepare food orders, stock shelves, serve at recess and lunch. A ‘Healthier’ Canteen requires more preparation of fresh food, so we really need volunteers. We lose helpers each year as families leave the school and we rely on new volunteers to keep costs down.

It is a very rewarding experience working alongside young students of all ages. It is recommended that students order their lunches before school or at recess. Lunch orders are given priority at lunch time to prevent delay and ensure that they receive their choice. Limited stock is sold without ordering.

The canteen also sells aprons (food technology, metalwork/woodwork), book packs or individual books and calculators.
