Careers

Career Education at Winmalee High School helps students build skills to make smart choices about their future. It supports their move from school into work, further study or university. Students explore their interests and goals, focusing on their own potential.

They set personal goals and learn what steps to take next. Special activities help them feel confident and ready for life after school.

Work experience is encouraged and easy to organise. It gives students real-world insight into jobs and helps them understand what’s needed in different fields. A key part is industry mentorship, where students work with professionals to learn from their knowledge and experience.

Year 10 students take part in regular careers lessons. They do interest tests, plan future training, write resumes and learn how to apply for jobs. They also learn about choosing HSC subjects, leadership, study options, and lifelong learning.

Year 11 and 12 students join workshops, seminars and info days. They get help with university and scholarship applications. The Careers Adviser offers one-on-one support, and students can drop in any time for advice.

University pathways

The school supports students in preparing for all types of tertiary study, including universities, colleges, and TAFE.

Students are encouraged to apply for Early Entry, Scholarships, Cadetships, and the Schools Recommendation Entry Scheme.

These programs are promoted at school as they open. University visits and open days are advertised, and students are encouraged to attend. Some universities even provide buses for transport.

School based VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses and TAFE based TVET courses

Winmalee High School offers Hospitality as a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course, taught by industry-accredited teachers. VET courses help students build real skills through practical work and lead to a Certificate II qualification. These are usually taken in Years 11 and 12.

Hospitality gives students dual accreditation – it counts as two HSC units, can contribute to an ATAR, and is also a recognised industry qualification.

TVET Courses (TAFE-delivered VET)

TVET courses are run by TAFE and also offer dual accreditation – they count towards the HSC and give students a nationally recognised certificate, depending on the course length.

Students in Years 11 and 12 can study TAFE courses through TVET. Some courses are also open to Year 10 and count towards the RoSA. These can lead to further study at TAFE, university, or skilled work.

To apply, students must speak with the Careers Adviser and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by August of the year before study.
(Example: A Year 10 student in 2025 must apply by August to start in 2026.)

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs)

SBATs let students earn a VET qualification and their HSC at the same time. Students work one day a week in paid employment, gaining real skills and experience in the workplace.

A School Based Apprenticeship allows students to start the first year of a trade qualification while completing Years 11 and 12.

All SBAT opportunities must be discussed and approved by the Careers Adviser before starting.
Find out more at: School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

SBATs must begin in Year 10 or Term 1 of Year 11. Students must be assessed as suitable before the Principal can approve.

Helpful Resources

Work Experience

Students aged 14 and over can take part in Work Experience. The timing is flexible and depends on employer availability and student interest.

Most students do one week of work experience in Year 10. They usually find their own placement, with help from parents or the Careers Adviser.

Work experience helps students build skills, gain confidence, and learn more about jobs they might enjoy in the future. It also looks great to future employers.

Students in Years 9, 11 and 12 can also apply, especially if it supports their career, study, or training goals. The Learning Hub helps students with special needs find suitable placements.

Please speak with the Careers Adviser for more information, forms, and support for travel or overnight stays.
