Aboriginal student support

Winmalee High School has approximately 40 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We are committed to ensuring that all of our Aboriginal students are engaged in and benefit from their school experience. We encourage all students to be aware of and celebrate their identity and culture. Our Aboriginal students have their own Home group where roll marking occurs each day along with the discussion of important and relevant issues.

Our teachers share a commitment to learn about, nurture and value the cultural identity of Aboriginal students in order to improve the knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal cultures for themselves and all students in the school. One of our staff, Kristie Wood, is a voting member on the local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, ‘Ngarra Wingarru’ which translates as ‘To Listen To Learn’. Kristie Wood is the current Aboriginal Student Group Coordinator.
