Winmalee High School Ski Racing Team

Winmalee High School ski racing team, the “Whirlwinds” have been gracing the snow with their presence for over thirty years now. We are extremely proud to be able to say that we have been a part of the NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships since its inception in 1987.

Our talented skiers and snowboarders have kept this strong Winmalee High tradition going, representing at all levels of this competition from the NSW Northern Division Championships, State Titles and National level Championships.

The Interschools Snowsports Championships are scheduled each year in the NSW alpine snowfields. The races are held alternately between Perisher Blue and Thredbo ski resorts and take place in the first week of the June/July holidays each year. All competent skiers and boarders are welcome to come along and compete in Skier and Boarder Cross, Alpine, Moguls or freestyle events, with parent helpers also welcomed.

The teams are sorted into divisions 1, 2 & 3 which are based on the students Year group. Division one being Years 11 & 12, Division 2 Years 9 & 10 and Division 3 Years 7 & 8. A development squad is also available for students who can already ski but want to come along for the first time and see what the races are all about.

At the beginning of each school year, expressions of interest are sought for participation in the team, with students filling in forms to indicate their skiing level and experience. From there a team is formed with notes and individualised invoices handed out at team meetings regularly throughout Terms 1 and 2.

Costs include transport, accommodation, ski lift tickets and hire equipment if required. All monies must be paid by the second last week of Term 2 prior to the team’s departure in the first week of the June/July holidays. The team also takes part in fundraising within the school to help subsidise the trip each year.

The Ski Racing Team always has a fun-filled week at the snow with students developing some valuable skills in not just snow sports but also independence, resilience, perseverance, teambuilding and collaboration. We encourage anyone, who is at all interested, to make contact with the school and talk to one of the team managers.
