Vocational Education Training (VET)

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses focus on delivering skills and knowledge and achieving qualifications required for entry level in specific industries. They allow students to investigate and/or begin a career pathway while continuing studies at school, where they develop industry specific competencies, work ready skills and have practical and real experiences in 70 hours of work placement. Hospitality Certificate II in Hospitality (Food & Beverage) is currently offered at Winmalee High School.

Students in NSW have the option of studying VET courses at school or through TAFE NSW or other training providers.

Students are required to complete 70 hours of mandatory work placement within the community to qualify for the attainment of their Certificate II in Hospitality. This is done over the two years of the course, completing 35 hours each year. 

Students will develop real life skills to help prepare them for future employment opportunities. Punctuality, initiative, working collaboratively and independently will develop a range of employability skills. Successful students may have the opportunity to gain casual employment within the local area. 

Students will also be expected to work collaboratively in a range of catering events within the school. Consistent, high rates of attendance are crucial to ensure all course competencies are achieved. 

To achieve and maintain industry standards, students will be expected to purchase a hospitality polo shirt and heavy duty apron to be worn at catering events and work placement.
