Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

What is Mathematics?

The Mathematics Faculty at Winmalee High School is a modern and progressive faculty working with a focus on teaching and learning strategies, ALARM (A Learning and Response Matrix) and PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning). The faculty are a dedicated and enthusiastic team with a strong focus on student progress and achievement. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for years 7-10, offering classes in the three strands of Mathematics in Stage 5. Stage 6 offers up to 6 different courses in the study of Mathematics.

What does learning look like in Mathematics?

The faculty embraces new technologies and ideas, taking a holistic approach which caters to individual strengths and interests. Traditional teaching methods are utilised in conjunction with technologically enhanced learning, such as Interactive Whiteboards, iPads and computers, to ensure the students' enjoyment and overall progress in Mathematics. Students are given the opportunity and are encouraged to compete in National competitions.

Mathematics Studies Stage 4 & 5 (Years 7-10)

Mathematics in Years 7-10 is part of the compulsory curriculum. Students all study the same curriculum in Stage 4 (Years 7-8), then as they progress to Stage 5 (Years 9-10) students are grouped according to individual mathematical ability. The Mathematics syllabus in Years 9 and 10 offers 3 different courses in order to give opportunities for all ability levels. At Winmalee High School all students are catered for with the teaching of all three courses, 5.3, 5.2 and 5.1. From Year 8 all levels of ability are catered for with a streamed system of placement utilised and all concepts adapted to suit specific level of ability.

Mathematics Studies Stage 6 (Years 11-12)

Mathematics in the senior school offers students more choices for their studies with emphasis placed on mathematical ability and their ideas of studies post high school. Students are offered ATAR courses which include Extension Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics and Standard Mathematics 2. The Mathematics Standard 1 course is also offered and is a non-ATAR course. In this course the students follow the Preliminary Standard Mathematics course then in the HSC year the course of study differs and students are not required to sit an HSC examination.
