What is Dance?

The Dance Courses at Winmalee High School are designed for students who have particular skills and interests in Dance and provides students with opportunities to develop these skills in individual and group settings. The course covers three strands – Performance, Composition and Appreciation across an integrated study of practical and theoretical components. We pride ourselves on strong and consistent HSC results each year, which are regularly above the state average.

What does learning look like in Dance?

Winmalee High School has fantastic and exemplar facilities for our performing arts programs including Dance. Our Performing Arts Centre (PAC) allows for ample Dance rehearsal space and an intimate performance area. This space features semi-sprung floors, mirrors, and a surround-sound sound system, and complies with the performance space requirements for the HSC Practical Dance Examinations.

In addition to the Year 9-12 Dance Program, Winmalee High School offers an extensive extra-curricular Dance Program across a variety of styles of dance including Contemporary, Jazz and Hip Hop. We also proudly boast that we are able to offer specialist ensembles in Classical Ballet and Tap, dependent on student numbers.

Students perform and compete at various events, festivals and eisteddfods across Sydney, consistently experiencing outstandingly high results. Many of our students are involved in Regional and State Dance Ensembles and Programs.

Dance Stage 5 (Years 9-10)

The Stage 4 Dance program focuses on performance and gives students the opportunity to perform at school and local events. Students work individually and in groups across a variety of dance styles including Contemporary, Jazz and Musical Theatre. Topics include Safe Dance Practice, Composition, Dance History, Dance Technology and Dance Technique.

Dance Stage 6 (Years 11-12)

The Preliminary and HSC Dance Course is programmed and delivered in an integrated approach across three strands – Performance, Composition and Appreciation. Year 11-12 Dance can be studied without completing the Year 9 and 10 course. Students will study a range of topics including Solo and Group Performance, Dance Technique, Solo and Group Composition, Dance History and Dance Analysis. The Practical HSC Examinations are conducted at school in our purpose built Performance Arts Centre (PAC).

Dance students at Winmalee High School are regularly achieving results above the state average in the HSC Course. Students are consistently nominated for Callback, which showcases the exemplary works from the HSC course selected from all NSW Public Schools. In 2018, the HSC Dance cohort received 8 Callback nominations for Core Performance, Core Composition, Major Study Performance and Major Study Composition.
